Review: Kamui Shiro, a young man, has mysterious forces following him. Following a tragic incident in which their mother died, Kamui’s mother took him from Tokyo when he was only a child, leaving him behind with his dearest friends, Kotori and her brother Fuma. After the death of his mother, Kamui returns to Tokyo a changed young man-moody and distant from his old friends, but determined to protect them from the dark forces around him. He holds the keys to a strange destiny that could decide the fate of the entire planet.

I found the story to be interesting, but not so fantastic. Many confusing parts in the first three volumes, my major problem. If I hadn’t read volume one, I wouldn’t be eager to continue. The first three volumes slowly reveal the story.

To some extent, all the characters, except Kotori, know what is happening. Depending on the character, some have full knowledge, while others have a brief understanding, but the reader is unaware until the character reveals it.

This book is baffling and mysterious. Before understanding, the reader must read all three volumes. Despite the ending leaving me hanging and picking up my interest, I’m not ready to say I’m hooked just yet. It will take me until the next volume to decide if I’ll stay with this series.

Overall, it’s not the strongest CLAMP series opener, but it’s worth reading for what comes after. I can’t wait to see how the story develops and the mysteries are solved in the next volume. I hope I’m as intrigued then as I am right now.
